DESCRIPTION

Frederick of Swabia – Porphyry

Caltagirone majolica ceramic bust – Sculpture depicting Frederick II of Swabia, King of Sicily and Holy Roman Emperor. Entirely hand-sculpted and decorated with porphyry glaze, it evokes the power of ancient imperial stones and the solemnity of Norman royalty.

The Crita busts of Frederick of Swabia, King of Sicily and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and of his mother Constance of Hauteville, sovereign queen of Sicily, are an evolution of the Moor's head of Caltagirone and the rediscovery of sculpture.

Stupor Mundi, entirely hand-sculpted in Caltagirone by our skilled master sculptors. These Caltagirone ceramic sculptures once again bring the Sicilian city's ceramics to the highest level.

Inspired by the great Laurana and medieval reliquaries, these busts were conceived as true works of art. Complex in form and purpose, they are decorative artifacts that also serve specific functions, such as holding flowers on their shoulders or transforming crowns into vises. In short, they are sculptures that can and want to come to life.

Porphyry, Carrara, and Silver are the three colors offered. Reminiscent of the noble materials once shaped to represent beauty and nobility. On terracotta, our glazes vibrate and give volume to these extraordinary objects.

Caltagirone ceramics always find in us the desire of interpreters who wish to elevate it. The history of Sicily lives on in our works.
