This pair of Moorish heads from Caltagirone is born from a legend that speaks of an unrequited love that finally blossomed in Messina between a beautiful girl named Marta, Mata in dialect, and Grifone , a very tall Saracen soldier, devoted to piracy.

And it is thanks to love that Grifone changes his life, giving up his raids and becoming a man Mata could love. And finally, from this love, numerous children were born, and tradition holds that our characters are the ancestors of the inhabitants of Messina.

Crita continues her journey through the gardens of Sicily, bringing Mata and Grifone in Giardino to the stage. Lush and fragrant gardens have surrounded the delightful villas dotting our island for centuries.
