Carciofi - Crita Ceramiche di Caltagirone

Artichoke

One of the symbols of Caltagirone ceramics is undoubtedly the pine cone. Our pine cones are beautiful and colorful, yet pine trees aren't exactly common in Caltagirone.

There is, however, a plant that has been cultivated in our area for centuries. A simple plant, it produces a fruit that resembles a flower more than a vegetable: the artichoke .

Is it possible that no one has ever thought of shaping this wonderful and generous flower in ceramic? No big deal, Crita finally did it.

According to the Greeks , the beautiful Cinara, rejecting Zeus 's advances, was transformed into an artichoke, condemned to inflame the senses and desires of men and women, effectively becoming a powerful aphrodisiac. Even Louis XIV did not resist its charms and ordered gardeners to cultivate the precious vegetable in the park of Versailles.

In short, a plant for gods and sovereigns that, finally, from the expert hands of our master craftsmen, leaf by leaf is composed as if they were delicate petals.

For Sicilians, the artichoke is a symbol of conviviality and rebirth; it is the main Easter food and a symbol of assured prosperity.

And this is what we wish for you with our colorful artichokes, ready to be eaten with your eyes.
